Mount Dora Christmas Lights With Kids: A Parent’s Planning Guide

| |

Mount Dora is one of Central Florida’s most charming small towns during the holidays, but visiting with kids takes a little strategy—especially when it comes to timing, parking, meals, and managing crowds. The good news? With a little planning, Mount Dora can be a magical evening for families who want to enjoy Christmas lights.

This guide focuses on the most walkable, kid-friendly light locations, where to eat with active children, and how to plan your day so you arrive before traffic and parking become challenging.

A Kid-Friendly Guide to Christmas in Mount Dora

Mount Dora History Museum

450 N Donnelly Street, Mount Dora, FL 32757

If you’re visiting Mount Dora with children, arriving early in the afternoon is one of the best ways to avoid evening congestion. The Mount Dora History Museum, located inside the city’s first prison and volunteer fire department, is open from 1 pm to 4 pm.

My son enjoyed a quick, hands-on look at local history before nighttime crowds arrived. It’s an easy educational stop that also positions you right in the heart of downtown before the lights begin glowing.

It reminded me of some of the free museums here in Orlando.

Donnelly Park

530 N Donnelly Street, Mount Dora, FL 32757
This is the centerpiece of Mount Dora’s Christmas light display and one of the most kid-friendly viewing spots. The surrounding decorations, photo opportunities, and towering trees give children plenty to explore without the need for long walks.

It’s an ideal starting point for families, especially for younger kids who may not last through a full evening stroll. And it is the site of a few of our favorite free holiday events.

Mount Dora Community Building

520 N Donnelly Street, Mount Dora, FL 32757
Located right behind Donnelly Park, this area is fully decorated during the holidays and often overlooked by visitors rushing to the waterfront. The wide sidewalks and open lawn space make it a great stop for kids who need room to move while still staying surrounded by lights and holiday décor.

Sunset Park

230 W 4th Avenue, Mount Dora, FL 32757
This smaller park packs the prettiest tree! Synchronized to festive music, the towering tree of Sunset Park is a must-see for kids. During the day, it is a small, cute park with a few snowman decorations.

Sunset Park becomes especially magical after dark with glowing trees, lake views, and seasonal décor. It’s near Lake Dora, so it is a good idea to dress in layers, as the evening wind from the lake can get a little extra chill from Florida’s version of Jack Frost.

This spot is also directly across from several dining options, making it a perfect pre- or post-dinner walk. Nearby kid-friendly dining includes The Salted Fry (where everything is Gluten-free), which offers outdoor seating and plenty of space for active children. For a fancier family meal, Pisces Rising overlooks Sunset Park and decorates their patio during the holidays with twinkle lights and seasonal touches.

Also nearby is The Butcher’s Nook at which has a cozy courtyard right next to Sunset Park.

BONUS IDEA: Mount Dora Marina

148 Charles Ave, Mount Dora, FL 32757

The marina is a farther walk than the other Christmas lights spots we’ve covered. But if you have active kids who are up for it, then visiting the marina is worth it for the super cute kid-friendly decorations. Plus, there is something magical about seeing Christmas lights reflected on Lake Dora.

Know Before You Go

Many Mount Dora restaurants and shops are closed Mondays and Tuesdays, including popular dining spots. If you are planning a midweek visit with kids, always check hours in advance so you’re not scrambling for food after sunset.

Daytime Fun Before Mount Dora Christmas Lights

If you’re visiting Mount Dora with kids, timing is everything. Many families find success starting their day at Amber Brooke Farms’ Christmas events earlier in the afternoon to let children burn energy on playgrounds and outdoor attractions. From there, plan to arrive in Mount Dora by around 3 pm to secure parking and enjoy an early dinner before crowds peak.

Most Christmas lights begin turning on around 5:15 pm, with full illumination by approximately 6 pm. This window allows families to enjoy the displays before younger kids become overtired.

Parking in Mount Dora

Recommended: Public parking lot across from First United Methodist Church
428 E 5th Ave, Mount Dora, FL 32757
This free lot is a great choice for families if you arrive early, before traffic picks up. It offers easy stroller access to downtown and some lighting for added visibility—try to park near one of the brighter lampposts for comfort when heading back after dark.

Also, this parking lot is near Hobscot Pet Supplies, which has a precious pet display out front.

250 N Donnelly St, Mount Dora, FL 32757
A centrally located option with multiple levels, helpful once the evening crowds arrive.
