What to Bring to Epic Universe: Tips from a Local Theme Park Mom

Epic Universe is finally open for previews, and as someone born and raised in Orlando, I couldn’t be more excited. I’ve been watching the construction for years, driving past the site, following every announcement, and counting down with my son, who took his first theme park ride at just 3 months old. This new park is going to be a game-changer, but it’s also huge, bright, and very different from what families might be used to at Universal Orlando.

Epic Universe: What to Bring

As a mom with many years of theme park visits under my belt, I want parents to have the best time possible when stepping into Epic Universe for the first time. That means being prepared, especially for the heat, the walking, and the size of this new experience.

Prepare for Sun

There is very little natural shade throughout the park, and much of the ground is bright white concrete that reflects the Florida sun like crazy.

I also recommend bringing a small portable fan or cooling towels, especially during warmer months. Ponchos or a compact umbrella are another staple in my bag—you never know when a quick Florida downpour will hit.

When I’m getting ready for a big park day—especially one as sprawling and sun-drenched as Epic Universe—there are a few things that always go in my bag. I start with sunscreen, applying it before we leave and keeping it handy for reapplying throughout the day.

A good hat and a pair of polarized sunglasses are must-haves, too—the sun reflects off the bright concrete walkways and it can be intense on your eyes. And of course, we bring a refillable water bottle. There are hydration stations throughout the park, including one with a fun dragon theme in the Isle of Berk that kids will love.

Lots of Walking

The long walk from the parking lot to the entrance (which, by the way, is uncovered and doesn’t have the moving walkways that Universal’s other garages do), means you’ll want to dress smart and plan ahead.

If you’re visiting with young kids, definitely bring or rent a stroller. Not only is it stroller-friendly, but there are designated stroller parking areas in each land. And since the park is laid out with immersive “portals” you have to walk through to enter each area, there’s no cutting across like in other parks.

You’ll be on your feet a lot, so strollers are a must for little ones (and maybe a bonus seat for your bag, too).

Gosh, now I miss the days when I had a stroller to hold all my stuff, our drinks, and our child.

By the way, with so much sun and so much walking, you may want to consider booking one of the many hotels near Epic Universe so you can easily relax after a long day.

And one last thing—charge your phone before you arrive and bring a portable battery. Between snapping photos, checking wait times, and navigating the park, your phone will be working overtime.
