Gatorland Welcomes Giant Rescue Gator and Baby Crocodiles

|

We love Gatorland, and I recommend it to both locals and visitors looking for a low-pressure, fun place to explore with kids. Sure, it’s known for alligators, but there’s so much more to discover here—from giant tortoises to capybaras, birds, wild cats, and even baby crocodiles!

New at Gatorland

New Rescue Gator from The Villages

Over Fourth of July weekend, Gatorland welcomed a huge new resident—Uncle Sam, a 10-foot-long, 700-pound alligator rescued from The Villages.

He was reportedly chasing lawnmowers and landscaping crews (can you imagine?), so Gatorland stepped in to give him a forever home where he’ll be safe and cared for. This isn’t the first time they’ve rescued a gator from The Villages—another gator named Larry joined the park back in 2019.

Baby Crocodiles

That same weekend, Gatorland also celebrated the arrival of two brand-new baby American Crocodiles—the first hatchlings of the year!

The animal care team incubates the eggs and sometimes helps the babies crack their way out. These tiny crocs are only 7–8 inches long at birth but will grow up to 14 feet long and weigh nearly 900 pounds! The babies have a special egg tooth on their nose that helps them break through the surface. It’s hard work for the baby crocs to break free from their eggshell, and sometimes staff will help them by gently cracking the egg.

It’s fascinating to learn about their growth and how the park protects them from day one.

What Else is at Gatorland?

Gatorland has been around since 1949 and just celebrated its 75th anniversary. It’s one of those places that still feels like “Old Florida,” but with lots of modern fun, too.

In addition to the gators and crocs, there’s a splash pad with lots of features, a petting zoo, an aviary, and some fun shows that really capture kids’ attention. My son especially loves the Gator Jumparoo Show—where huge gators leap out of the water for food!

For animal-loving families, Gatorland is a great alternative to the big theme parks. It’s more relaxed, more affordable, and packed with things to see and do.

If you’re curious about conservation, Gatorland is also doing important work through its nonprofit, Gatorland Global, helping protect gators, crocs, and their habitats all over the world. I love supporting places that are fun and doing good.

So if you’re looking for a day full of animal encounters and Florida-style adventure, I highly recommend a visit to Gatorland!
