Alexander Springs
Best for: camping, swimming, snorkeling, hiking and canoeing
Did you know that Florida has one of the largest concentrations of natural springs in the world? Our amazing state is home to more than 900 natural springs, primarily located in the northern and central regions and often within state parks.
About 40 are open to the public, including Alexander Springs, which adventure-driven kiddos and teens will absolutely love. Situated on the edge of Lake County, within the Ocala National Forest area, this spot is popular for camping, swimming, snorkeling, hiking, and canoeing.
And for family members who are scuba certified, Alexander Springs is the only place in the Ocala National Forest where scuba diving is permitted. Aside from enjoying the brisk 72-degree water, Alexander Springs offers walking trails, camping, and more.
Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive
Best for: nature viewing, animal sightings, science education, photography
Not every animal encounter in Central Florida requires lofty admission. The Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive is at the top of our list of free things to do with kids, and can be enjoyed from the comforts of your very own air-conditioned vehicle.
Without any barriers, like cages or fences, this open 11-mile drive grants unparalleled opportunities to see Florida wildlife in their native environment surrounding Lake Apopka, which happens to be the fourth largest lake in Florida.
There’s a great chance you’ll see many bird species, alligators, raccoons, otters, snakes, and maybe even bobcats. To get the most out of this 20,000-acre exploration, tune into the online audio tour.

Lake Louisa State Park
Best for: nature viewing, hiking, picnicking, playground, camping/glamping
Perhaps cousin to the famed reindeer of the North Pole, white-tailed deer roam freely throughout Lake Louisa State Park. Encourage little hikers to use whispering voices as you hike within the 4,500-acre state park so as not to scare off these majestic creatures, which really are a sight to see.
Trails are also peppered with gopher tortoises, fox squirrels, woodpeckers and many other creatures. This nature wonderland includes a stunning lakeside picnic area and cool playground, and all awaits with just a $5 per car fee.
Plus, Lake Louisa is ideal for geocaching, horseback riding and camping — from primitive to glamping. In fact, novice campers may prefer the onsite cabin rentals.
Farmer’s Market at Downtown Clermont
Best for: casual snacking/lunching, buying local
Picky eaters may just be more inclined to try healthier foods if they participate in the selection process. Packed with flavorful fun, farmers’ markets display diverse local flare ─ everything from lattes to fresh-squeezed juices, kennel corn to pickles, crepes to noodle bowls and, of course, local produce, meat, honey, eggs and seafood.
Featuring 40 vendors, the Downtown Clermont Farmer’s Market is held every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Leesburg Food Trucks + Flicks
If it’s a struggle to get everyone to agree on what to eat for dinner, a food truck event may just satisfy all. At the Leesburg Food Truck + Flicks event, everyone can choose different eats and meet back at the picnic blanket for al fresco chomping and chatter. When you’re ready to take a break from food truck feasting, take in the live musical tunes, gaze at the classic cars and, then, settle in for the outdoor movie.

Amber Brooke Farms
Best for: outdoor playgrounds, u-pick berries and flowers
Located in Eustis, Amber Brooke Farms is a 40 minute drive from Orlando and absolutely worth it. Packed with multiple playgrounds and play structures, you’re bound to have an awesome play day together.
During berry season from December to early April you can pick strawberries early and later in the season, juicy blueberries. Sunflowers and colorful zinnia flowers beckon for a handpicked bouquet.

DreamCatchers Horse Ranch and Rescue Center
Best for: horses and equestrian activities
Saddle up to experience horseplay with, well, horses. This family-owned horse rescue strives to educate the community about preventing animal cruelty, and horse rescue and rehabilitation.
Be sure to book an appointment for the equine experience of your choosing: trail riding, pony rides, barn tours, lessons, parties, and more farm fun.
LunaSea Alpaca Farm
Best for: petting zoo
If your kid is a fan of the ‘Llama Llama’ book series and Netflix show, head to LunaSea Alpaca Farm which houses alpacas and llamas. While these two animals are often confused, alpacas are smaller and bred for their plush sheep-like fibers.
These shy Peruvian mammals casually roam the rolling hills of Lake County for you to marvel.
By booking an appointment, you can pet and feed the alpacas and even awe at the babies in the alpaca nursery. Stock up on fleece attire and other items sold in the farm store.

Santa’s Christmas Tree Forest
Best for: seasonal events
Far from the North Pole, our little southern city has its very own Christmas tree farm that would even impress Santa Claus. Every year, locals and visitors alike head to Eustis to marvel at its 17 lush acres of trees.
In fact, Santa’s Christmas Tree Farm presents a beloved holiday tradition like none other: u-pick Christmas Trees. But, the fun amps up way before the winter season when Santa’s Christmas Tree Forest hosts an Easter egg hunt and festival during the springtime and pumpkin patch in the fall.

Event admission includes access to a petting zoo, hayrides, a bouncy pillow, and much more.
Showcase of Citrus
Best for: interactive outdoorsy adventure
To peel back the layers of parenthood’s daily stresses, head to Showcase of Citrus, a 2,500-acre rustic ranch blossoming with more than 50 varieties of citrus. There is so much to do at this hidden gem.
First, breathe in the sweet and tart citrus scents as you pick your way through the orange groves. Next feed the chickens, goats, pigs, miniature horse, kangaroo and donkey. Then, climb aboard the modified monster truck which stands 14-feet wide, 16-feet tall and 40-feet long!

During Showcase of Citrus’ one-hour Monster Truck Safari Tour, venture beyond the farm through the neighboring woodlands, swamps and pastureland to see zebra, watusi, water buffalo, alligators, snakes, and native birds. Afterward, shop the general store and refreshment stand for honey, jelly, other condiments, wines, a selection of fresh juices and other treats.
Southern Hill Farms
Best for: u-pick, seasonal events, family photo-shoots
Not far farm the Hamlin community of Winter Garden, Southern Hill Farms earned a name for itself as the go-to place for seasonal blueberry picking. Then, this family-owned and operated farm grew to include peaches, pumpkins, strawberries, sunflowers and zinnias.
Catering especially to families with younger children, this farm has a large playground space, spacious restrooms, hayrides, homemade treats, and, for those 21+, a beer stand that infuses brews with its own berries. Southern Hill Farms also hosts tons of events with live music, games and entertainment aplenty.
Stanley Pond Farm
Best for: catch-and-release fishing, miscellaneous farm fun
Stanley Pond Farm claims to “harvest fun” through agritainment, aka a farm fresh blend of agriculture-inspired entertainment. Once known as a Christmas tree farm (and still lined with evergreen trees), Stanley has found its niche for outdoorsy amusement.
Pass the time with playful pastimes, like catch-and-release fishing, a jumping pillow, splash pad, trike racing, u-pick sunflowers and other outdoorsy activities.

Aside from strolling Mount Dora’s quaint streets by foot, the historic town is best discovered by boat. The Harris Chain of Lakes has several lakes, some of which are explore by CatBoat Tours, a fully-guided and narrated excursion that’ll really give your family a splash of adrenaline. A catboat is a unique two-seater powered mini-catamaran that’s easily operated by hand controls. While only adults can drive, passengers just have to be at least 5 years old to coast along on this wild ride.
Revolution Off Road
Best for: All terrain vehicle adventures
Revolution Off Road is a distinctive adventure park that inspires riders to rev the engines of ATVs, dune-buggies and “muddy ducks,” an 8-wheeled amphibious vehicle that can conquer nature trails, mud holes and ponds. Fair warning parents:
